HTC to launch Flyer tablet PC in March

Have you heard about HTC – the company well-known for making most of the high-quality Google Android phones – and their plans to launch three tablet PCs in the first half of 2011? Well, according to sources, the first one will begin shipping in the US market in March. Dubbed the Flyer, it apparently looks like an enlarged version of HTC’s Desire smart phone, according to component suppliers for the company.

Disappointingly, it appears the Flyer will run Android 2.3 on launch – a version of Android not designed for use on tablets. The other planned tablets are touted to run Android 3.0 instead, which is the next version of Android currently in development in Google, and supposedly optimizes the experience for tablets and phones. However, users will be able to upgrade the OS to Android 3.0 whenever the new OS is available, so is claimed.

The Flyer will be available in other markets starting the second quarter of 2011.

It would be interesting to see how their tablet offering stacks up against known competitors – such as the Motorola Xoom, which is another Android Tablet planned to be released around the same time; and of course the Apple iPad. What do you think of this development?
